When Elsberry Martin was born on August 29, 1820, his father, Joseph, was 33 and his mother, Nancy, was 30. He married America Brown on April 5, 1841, in Clay, Missouri. They had two children:
Both parents died before 1850, Elsberry died on February 2, 1847, in Platte, Missouri, at the age of 26, and America died as a young mother on April 3, 1846; both were buried in Platte City, Missouri. Willis went to live with America's parents and James was sent to live with his Uncle Isaac's family.
