Biography

Margaret Louise was born about 1868 in Milton, Massachusetts, the daughter of Nicholas and Ellen (Dee) Martin.

She attended the Salem Normal School, a training school for teachers that later became Salem State University, in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1890.[1] In 1893, she was hired as a teacher at the Cummings School in Somerville.[2]

In 1897, she married Thomas Francis O'Malley, a lawyer of Somerville.[3] They had one child, a daughter Helen, born in Somerville in 1902.

At a time when most women gave up their teaching careers upon marrying, Margaret was one of the ones who continued to teach after her wedding. In 1910, she was a lodger in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where her occupation is given as school teacher. She was married and had 1 child, though neither are of the household at that time.[4] She is also described as a "teacher [at the] Perry school" in the 1906 Somerville Directory. In 1905, she was one of two first grade teachers at the Knapp School, also in Somerville.[5] She was a teacher for 20 years in the Somerville Public Schools.

In 1920, the couple, with their daughter, were boarders in Brookline, Massachusetts, at the home of Lucy E. Harris.[6] At the time of the 1930 census, the family lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts.[7]

By 1940, Thomas, Margaret and their adult daughter Helen had removed to Belmont, Massachusetts. Thomas continued his private practice as a lawyer and Helen worked as a land title examiner.[8]

Her obituary calls her a 75-year resident of Cambridge. She was active in various civic and charitable organizations and also served on the board of overseers of the Holy Ghost Hospital in Cambridge. She died at the age of 84, in 1952. She was buried at the Old Calvary Cemetery.[9]
