Biography

The known offspring of Joseph's parents, Simon Martin & Théotiste Amireau, were five sons & no daughters, according to data published by Jean Bernard. Given the various known and estimated dates of birth & marriage that Bernard reports, it appears most likely that Joseph was the eldest of the five boys.[1]

Stephen White estimates 1776 as year of marriage (no location specified).[2]

Joseph & wife Geneviève are known to have had a daughter, followed by two sons, all three of whom survived to marry.[3]

Joseph was listed as a guardian and witness at the wedding of his nephew, Simon Martin, on January 11th 1819, in Rustico, Prince Edouard Island. The groom was the minor son of deceased Firmain Martin and deceased Marguerite Poirier. The bride. Apolline Le Brun, was the minor daughter of deceased François Lebrun and Sébastienne-Josèphe "Basquienne" Doiron. All these persons were members of this parish.[4][5] Witnesses: for the groom - his uncle and guardian Joseph Martin, his brother Joseph Martin; for the bride - her brother in law Simon Gautreau, & her brother Cyrille LeBrun. Only Simon Gautreau could sign.[6]

The death & burial record of Geneviève (3 & 4 Dec 1837, age recorded as 89 [such recorded ages commonly were estimates, often exaggerated]) is noted as "wife of Joseph Martin," and not as "widow" (which would typically have been done if she had indeed been widowed), it is likely that Joseph was still alive, hence the supposition here that Joseph died after that point.[7]

Research Note

J. Bernard [8] shows no date or place for either the birth or death of Joseph Martin. He does report White's estimate of birth of wife Geneviève in about 1753, so that year is reported here as a guess for Joseph's birth as well.

St-Pierre-du-Nord, Prince Edward Island (then Île-Saint-Jean) was previously shown as Joseph's birthplace, based on undocumented data in NosOrigines[9], but that undoubtedly refers to his first cousin once removed: see Joseph Martin.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA test-takers in his direct paternal line. Mitochondrial DNA test-takers in the direct maternal line: It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:

Is there a source that would confirm his parents? It was recently changed to confident but I can't see documentation for this.

I filled in the source re parentage. Too bad more people don't have access to Jean Bernard's multi-vol. print publication of the genealogy of Acadian families on PEI to 1900 (or 1921 in the case of the 2nd ed. of vol. I on Arsenault). I nipped & tucked some other wording, hoping I left no errors behind!

Martin-24192 and Martin-5692 do not represent the same person because: Both profiles need correcting. Both profiles confuse two different me, who were first cousins once removed, The husband of Geneviève Richard is the son of Simon, son of François. The latter is a brother of Bathélemy, father of the other Joseph Martin (b. 1741 at St-Pierre-du-Nord; we do not know anything more about this Joseph, as far as I can determine). Part of the confusion seems to stem from undocumented material in NosOrigines.
