Marguerite Mélanie Martin was born in 1836 in Chénières,[1] near Longwy in Moselle, France (when most of Moselle was annexed to the German empire after the treaty of Francfort in 1871, Chénières remained French and joined the newly created département of Meurthe-et-Moselle), the daughter of Jean Nicolas Martin, a shoemaker, and Marie Catherine Bailly. She married twice. Her first marriage was with Pierre Alexandre Poncin, who died in 1867.[1] Her second marriage was with Jean Georges Scharrer, in 1873 in Metz[1] (then part of the German empire, while her parents still lived in Chénières on the other side of the border).
