-------------------
The father of Welcome, is David Martin. David Martin and his family turn up in Washington County Virginia ca 1792. Never dreaming that he was not a Virginian I chased every David Martin I could find around that state. Had a few candidates to be him but I could never get him from point A to point B so to speak. I knew that my Welcome Martin had a daughter by the name of Freelove, so the Cole family who had a daughter Freelove caught my eye. After reading about that family and others of the Baptist Church group that had settled in the Washington County Virginia area out of New England via New York, the idea was beginning to take shape that maybe Old David Martin was not from Virginia. Finally made contact with a descendant of David Martins through his son Benjamin and found out Benjamin lived to make the 1850 census, and said he was born in New York, and the chase was on. The 1790 Ulster County, New York Census offered the best candidate to be David Martin. One day I was snooping around on the net and discovered that a Nehemiah Ludlum Smith had married a Lydia Martin and they lived and died in Ulster County New York. We know from David Martin's will he had a daughter Lydia Smith and no record of her ever turns up in Virginia with the others. So I sent out a call for help to my two Martin searching buddies. Within the last month we have got a copy of Lydia Smith's will and she is David Martin's daughter. She was kind enough to name some of her brothers and sisters in her will. - Source - Mary Ellen Baker - e-mail - vbaker@htc.net
