Research Notes

Mary Martine is presumed the daughter of James Martin and Joan Adams, otherwise the "Maria Martin alias Batt," a "natural" daughter of James Martin who appeared in court about her father's estate.[3] For details about the Martin-Adams marriage, see "Biggs Family" in "Notes," New England Historical and Genealogical Register 92 (1938);397, 397n; digital images by subscription, AmericanAncestors.

Mary was born in 1563.

There are differences in the two chid lists in the narratives of Mary Martine (Martine-2) and spouse James Bate (Bate-407).

The list on James' profile is more detailed, the linked children's profiles in that narrative match those listed in the narrative.

The list on Mary's profile includes children who are not linked. This includes,

  • Jane (Bates) Parker (Bates 2105) whose profile contains a note explaining that she is not shown a daughter of James and Mary.
  • John Isaac Bates, 3rd, of Virginia, whose profile reports James and Mary are disputed.

Martine-179 and Martine-2 appear to represent the same person because: Clear duplicate

Mary (Martine) Bates (1565-1610) and Mary (Martine) Bates (1563-abt.1620) are obvious duplicates, Same father, birth day and month. Believe the year is a typo on one or the other. 1563 and 1565 would look similar. Also, the incorrect mother https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Snelling-142 was recently added to the profile of Mary (Martine) Bates (1565-1610) without any sources. Please remove the unmerged match and propose a merge. Also, Snelling-142 needs to be removed as mother from Martine-179 before the merge. Thank you.

Hi Faylene,

As many as a dozen profiles are tangled in a series of recent changes, including the duplicate profiles about which you write. Have been working now for several hours to post disputed associations sections to the different profiles, and then correct the apparent relationship oversights.

Please be patient. --Gene

I would like to remove the marriage of Mary to John Bates-38 6 June 1580 in Lydd Kent, England. It is possible that there was an earlier incorrect merge of Bates-38 of Oxfordshire with James Bate-407 of Lydd. James Bate-407 had previously (incorrectly) been listed as John. See note on Bates-407:

"Proposal to change given name from John to James (Bate-407, 16th century) May 20, 2014."

What evidence is there that Mary Martine was the mother of John Bates, immigrant to Virginia?
