Ffebr 20th: 1676-7 Errours excepted - RICHARD MARTYN [6]

Interesting to see the amounts paid to build a schoolhouse and for work on the meetinghouse as well as the wide variation in what folks paid for taxes, from 2s to £6. He mentions “son Cutts” in the 1672 rate, so his daughter Sarah must have married in that year at age 15.

Richard was the overseer of the estate of John Raynor of Dover 10 June 1679[7] and was the administrator of the estate of Samuel Symonds 15 Oct. 1679. [8]

He was a grand juryman in 1666, selectman 1669-70, 1673-5, commissioner to end small causes 1671, Deputy 1672-3, 1679, 1692 (as speaker), Magistrate from 1676, Treasurer of the Province under President Cutts, Councilor from 1680 until he was removed by Cranfield in 1683.[9] In a letter to Daniel Dennison 26 Sept. 1676 Richard Martyn of Portsmouth informed him that the Indians were destroying property and lives at Casco Bay, that a few of the enemy were killed and taken, that the English were much in want of bread, and that more soldiers were greatly needed at Wells and York. Consequently General Dennison was ordered to Portsmouth on 11 Oct. to take command of the eastern expedition.[10] He was on Dudley's Committee of Trade and Navigation in 1686, Judge of the Court of Common Pleas 1692-3, Chief Justice Supreme Court Oct 1693 until his death 2 Apr. 1694. He was also town clerk during his last year.

"The names of those men who were Instituted by his Majests Commissioners to governe the Province of mayn In new England July 1665 & were turned out by the Commissioners of Boston July 1669... men that are Enimies to Mr Gorges interests in the Province of mayne... the names of some men in new hampshire... mr. Richard marten of the same (Strawberry Banke)" [11]

Richard had a brother Michael, mariner of Boston, who married Susannah Holyoke 12 Sept. 1656 in Boston. He died 26 Mar. 1682, age 60 years and was buried at Copps Hill. His grave stone has a coat of arms which implies that the family was of the English aristocracy. The arms are of Martyn of Exeter and Kemys, Pembrokeshire "Argent two bars Gules".

Richard Martyn wrote his will in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on Jan 27 1693. It was proved on April 17, 1694. In part he leaves his wife Mary

  • "my right in the negro called Thomas Hall"
  • "that web of cloth which is now spinning in the house and Harrah Harris her time the said web be spun and then said Hannah shall be free" [12]

Slaves

  • Thomas Hall - Richard's part ownership bequeathed to his wife Mary
  • Hannah Harris - to be free upon finishing a spun cloth
