Merced Martínez was born in the Plaza de Zaragoza on July 8, 1898, in Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes, Mexico, the third child of Victoriano Martínez, age 29 and Tomasa Ponce, age 26. He married Christina Lira on December 31, 1915, in El Paso, Texas. They had ten children in 16 years. He died on October 9, 1959, in El Paso, Texas, at the age of 66, and was buried there.
En la iglesia parroquial de la Asunción de Aguascalientes, a cuatro de noviembre de mil ochocientos noventa y tres; Yo el Presbítero, Manuel Delgado, de licencia parroqui, bauticé solemnemente y puse los santos óleos a José de las Mercedes, que nacio el veinticuatro del pasado setiembre a las siete de la mañana en la plaza de Zaragoza, hijo legítimo de Victoriano Martínez y de Tomasa Ponce, abuelos paternos: Jorge Martínez y Paula Rodríguez, y maternos: Santos Ponce y Narcisa Calvillo, aquienes advertí su obligación y parentesco espiritual. Para constancia lo firmé con el señor Cura, Mauricio M. López.
In the parish church of the Assumption of Aguascalientes, 4th of November 1893. I the presbyter (priest), Manuel Delgado, with license from the parish priest, solemnly baptized and put holy oils on José de las Mercedes, who was born on the 24th of the past September at seven o'clock in the morning in the Plaza de Zaragoza, legitimate son of Victoriano Martinez and Tomasa Ponce, paternal grandparents: Jorge Martinez and Paula Rodriguez, and maternal (grandparents): Santos Ponce and Narcisa Calvillo, whom I warned of their obligation and spiritual kinship. For the record I signed with the priest, Mauricio M. López.

January 1906
In January 1906, at the age of 13, Merced Martínez lawfully emigrated to the United States via the El Paso Electric Railway with his parents Victoriano Rodríguez Martínez and Tomasa Ponce and his four siblings. The El Paso Electric Railway began 4 years earlier in 1901 providing transportation via mule-drawn streetcars.

Merced Ponce Martinez died on October 9th, 1959 of congestive heart failure. He was 66 years old. A Rosary service and Funeral Mass were held at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, with Rev. A. Cubillo officiating. He was laid to rest in Evergreen Alameda Cemetery.
Retired Railroad Employee Dies
Merced Martinez of 3828 Rivera street died yesterday at his home. He was 66. Mr. Martinez lived in El Paso five years. He was a retired employee for the Southern Pacific Railroad.
Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Christina Martinez; three sons, Donaciano, Lorenzo and Merced Martinez Jr., all of El Paso; five daughters, Mrs. Guadalupe Mejia of Pomona, Calif., Mrs. Tomasa Pinon, Mrs. Margarita Noriega, Mrs. Lucia Reyes and Mrs. Maria Duran of El Paso; five brothers, Pascual, Ysabel, Carlos and Macedonio of El Paso and Victor Martinez of Garfield, N.J.; a sister Miss Macrina Martinez; 27 Grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Rosary services will be held at 8 p.m. tomorrow in Rodehaver-Miller Chapel. Other arraignments are pending.
