Mary Marwood was left £ 6,000 pounds by the 1767 Will of her father, James Marwood. It was to be paid to her when she reached the age of 21.
Mary married the Reverend George Notley in about 1785. [2] A marriage settlement, (which was made in September 1784), reserved half of Mary's existing estate to her own use (excluding her husband), together with half of any future inherited share of her lunatic brother James' fortune.[3]
They had two children:
George and Mary also took in a child baptised on the 12th of May 1808 at Chillington as Martha , base born child of Martha Brownsy" ( no father is mentioned ).
The entry is in the Chillington register - opposite the one recording the birth dates ( and baptisms ) for the two Notley children: George Notley and James Thomas Benedictus Notley. All three entries are in the same handwriting - that of the Curate ( in 1808 ), Thomas Allen. [4]
Martha Brownsey became Martha Notley and in the main body of his will , written 20th May 1824, George Notley states: also Martha Notley, who is now and has for some years lived and resided with me for her natural life an annuity of £ 200 yearly .. George Notley’s will has a 3rd codicil dated 1st March 1828, which revokes his bequests to Martha because she is getting married ( on the 5th of March, to a William Collard ). [5]
Mary Notley died on the 3rd of June 1829, at Combe Sydenham, Stogumber, Somerset, and was buried on the 17th June at Chillington, Somerset, England. Her age was recorded as 79. [6]
An obituary for Mary (Marwood) Notley appeared in the Exmouth & Plymouth Gazette dated 13th June 1829:- On the 3rd. instant, at Combe Sydenham, far advanced in years, Mary, the affectionate and beloved wife of George Notley, Esq. whose loss will be long and most severely felt by her family and friends.
In an inquisition into the lunacy of her brother, J.T.B. Marwood, dated 13th of February 1778, it is stated: Mary Marwood, aged 25 years...of Avishays...Spinster...
