Biography

Thomas was the son of John Marwood of Blamphayne and Frances (Burnard) . His birth date of 1660 is an estimate based upon his age of 88 on his death in March 1749.

Thomas married Joan Hutchins, daughter of John Hutchins Esq. of Allor in Upottery, Devon. A marriage settlement was made dated 25th May 1689 involving land in Crocombe, Colyton, Devon. [1]

They had two children: James and Mary .

On the death of his brother James in 1722 Thomas Marwood inherited the Sutton estate in Widworthy, which became his residence.

Thomas Marwood of Sutton, Widworthy, Devon, died in 1748/9. His will, written 21 April 1748 was proved on 2 May 1749. [2]

He was commemorated on a monument on the North wall of the chancel of St Cuthbert's church, Widworthy, which read:
Beneath lye ye bodies of three brothers James Marwood of Sutton Esqr. M.D. dyed October 27. 1722 aetat. 66. Benedictus Marwood of Hornshayes Esqr.dyed August 28 1745 aetat. 82. Thomas Marwood of Sutton Esqr. dyed March 21 1748 aetat. 88 Eminent for Honesty, Piety and good economy.
