Attached is a page from the Bible of Jordan Mashburn and Sarah Cowen
Mashburn. Sarah was the daughter of Peter Cowen and Mary (Polly) Merrill.
Notice their marriage is recorded as Sarah KYAS. This is the first place I
have seen the surname actually spelled out.
Both Sarah and my husband grew up (didn't know each other) hearing about the name change, that the family was German and wanted to Americanize their
name. Yet, this Bible page tells me they also had reverance for the original name. This page was given to us by Jim Mashburn who lives in Springfield, MO. Also the other page was written by his grandfather, Irving, son of Jordan and Sarah Mashburn.
This name of KYAS is rare, although there are a few in the US and Germany.
The marriage of Jordan and Sarah was recorded in Polk Co (Hickory was
originally a part of Polk) as Sarah Owens on the index however the original
recording you could see that it was Cowens.
I have tried from time to time to find info on KYAS but to no avail. I
wonder if the DNA program offered on ancestry might help. I recently
suggested to my stepson that he do it and that way he could get the Cowen
info and his mother's as he has been working on her line. It should clue us into the areas they came from in Europe, etc.
Sarah had thoughts about Peter's migration to KY. She thought perhaps he
had inherited some money as he quickly bought up 800 acres of land in KY in
the early 1800's. Perhaps he was a lone survivor of a family and that he
maybe hooked up with Mary (Polly) and some Scotch Irish and when the name
change came out of that. It appears on the early Simpson, Warren, Logan
county census there are not German names that pop out.
Did he hook up with Sarah and marry her in NC? From your information and
several genealogies on ancestry on the Merrills and Hadens I would think
that a group of them came to KY near the same time or at least followed each other there.
William Mashburn and Sally Mashburn, his wife, with their children, came to what is now Hickory county, from Kentucky, in 1841. They both died in Hickory county, Mo., William in 1847, and Sally in 1873.
