Dudley William Mason was born in Surbiton, Surrey on 7 October 1901. [1]
In 1911, he was living with his parents in Long Ditton [2]
His first wife was Elsie A Coates, they were married in Hendon in 1920 [3]
Dudley was master of the tanker SS Ohio during the Second World War. It was a 14,000 ton tanker, that could carry 1,000 tons of fuel. In 1942, 14 vessels, including the Ohio, were formed into a convoy to deliver essential supplies to the island of Malta, it was called Operation Pedestal.
The Ohio was hit by Italian torpedoes in August 1942, and was continuously shelled for 4 days. Dudley and his crew managed to steer the stricken ship into port, despite the on board fires and lack of any compass. He was awarded the George Cross for this operation on 8 September 1942.
Dudley married his second wife Vera M M Macquire (nee De Smitt) in Bristol in 1948. [4]
