Benjamin Harrison and sd John Mason (being land granted to Nathaniel Corbet on 9 Jul 1724 and sold by him as part of 640 acres to sd John Mason on 9 Oct 1730). Joseph Mason now lives on the land. Wit: Robert Wynne, Edward Pettway, Sloman Wynne. Rec. 17 May 1738.”[2]

He married Pheobe Shands in 1740, the daughter of William Shands and Nazareth Roberts. The Surry County order book in 1751 to 1753 on page 19 notes: On November 19, 1751 John Ogburn, having married Phoebe, widow and relict of Joseph Mason, who died intestate leaving issue among others his eldest son and heir at law Seth, now an infant of very tender age, prays distribution of estate and his wife’s dower, by consent of said Ogburn as well as John Mason next friend to said Seth. The orphans of Joseph Mason are listed as Seth, Ann, John, and William on page 83 of the order book."
