John Mason was the son of Sampson Mason, Sr. and Marie Butterworth. He was born between 12 Feb 1656 and 18 Mar 1656, although the profile date of birth has been matched to the Find A Grave profile He was married on 15 Oct 1679 to Content Wales daughter of John Wales . They may have had at least two children John Mason, Jr. and Sarah. John Mason died 18 Mar 1683.
Notes: John was raised as a son by John Gurnell, a wealthy and respected citizen of Dorchester, and his wife Jane when John Mason's father moved to Rehoboth. (He did not go with his Mason family.) John Guernell was a tanner and as such was probably a close associate of Sampson Mason. When Guernell died in 1675, he left his house, lands and tannery to his wife to dispose of as she saw fit. She remarried, but when she died she bequeathed the use of the house to her second husband for as long as he should live but gave the tannery to John Mason along with the land and buildings after the death of her second husband, John Burge. The records of the First Church of Dorchester contain the following entry: "John ye Sonne of Sampson Mason baptized ye 23rd ye 7 ye 60 being about 4 years old when he was baptized because his father in his Judgement was and is against ye baptizing of infants yet he being at Seacock doe p'mite yt bror Gornell (with whom ye child doe dwell? may bring it forth to be baptized." John Mason was brought up in Dorchester and learned the tanner's trade. On 4 March 1676/7, the elders of the church at Dorchester drew up a list of those above the age of sixteen years who were asked if they wished to join the church. Listed among those who gave their consent was Content Wales, the future wife of John Mason. But John Mason, then twenty-one, and probably reluctant to join the Church of Dorchester and thus abandon the faith of his father, asked that he be given time to consider the proposal. He gave his consent on 11 March 1676/77. In June 1677, Content and her brother Elkanah Wales, children of John Wales Senior, "owned the covenant." John was not mentioned by name in his father's will dated 22 October 1672. Source listed See Also: David T. Robertson. Some Savin Hill (Dorchester) Families. NEHG 593, January 1995. [1]
