Mary Confort charged with stealing a large quantity of money consisting of bank notes, orders & other things amounting upwards 34 pounds property of John Smith a hut keeper at Bigga Peter Carney charged with having received a portion of the stolen property, knowing it to be stolen. Prisoner pleaded not guilty. John Smith deposed - I am a watchman in the employ of Mr Hurden at Bigga when the robbery was committed - the prisoner Carney was there. Having complained of a headache , Mrs Confort advised me to go to a pool of water & wrench ( rinse) my head. I went away & on my return found the jacket containing property stolen. Mrs Confort - Mrs Cooper - Carney the prisoner - Mr Confort and John Glayes a witness were there. When I complained about my loss of property they all said they knew nothing about it. I went to O'Sullivans at Goulburn to report the loss of cheque I did not see Mrs Cooper until I came back again. I remained at the station for several days, after that I spoke to Carney and he told me he was the person who received two chequeres from Mrs Cooper, that she had kept them between her stockings and the skin of her leg and that he had lost them. When I came back from talking with Carney, I charged Mrs Confort with destroying them. John Glaves had breakfast with Mrs Confort. I could not say whether Mrs Cooper was in the hut. Mary Ann Cooper - I am nearly 13 years of age, I live with my father & mother, we live with a person named Marks. I remember going from Mr Marks to Cobcrofts Station, I went o Conforts Station, Carney , Smith ,Graves & another breakfast together. Mrs Confort, my mother, my little sister and myself had breakfast by ourselves. The men were all at the folds when we were there.Having had breakfast I was helping Confort grind at the mill, I saw Mrs Confrt give my mother a handful of papers. I heard my mother say as she read them, that they were as good as bank notes. Mrs Confort then burned them. I heard my mother say that they were orders & agreements & a certificate among the papers. Deborah Cooper - I am a married woman residing at Bigga and my husband is in the employ of Mr Marks, I live with my husband. The Conforts live about 2 miles from our residence. I do remember going to their Station and stopping for some time. I breakfasted on the morning of the robbery with Mrs Confort & the children. After breakfast I went into the inner room to comb one of my children's hair. Mrs Cooper then deposed that Smith complained of the robbery. Cross - Examined - I cannot swear weather Mary Ann Cooper was in the hut or not. When the men were at breakfast Carney said he received the cheque X from Mrs Cooper and not from Mrs Confort.
