James Mason was born in 1856 [1] in Bolton, Lancashire, England. [2] the son of John Mason, a fitter. [3] and Ellen Renshaw. [4] He was baptised on 15 June 1856 in St Peter's church, Bolton le Moors, Lancashire. [5]
His parents moved to Warrington when he was young. In 1861, James was living in Winwick Road, Warrington. His father was a millwright; his mother a laundress. [4]
On 29 May 1881, at St Elphin's, Warrington, Lancashire, he married Mary Whittaker, the daughter of John Whittaker, file cutter. James was a moulder.
Witnesses were John Hussy and Ann Crooks. [3] The couple had at least 8 children. [6]
In 1911 he was living in Winwick Street with his wife and 4 unmarried children. [6]
