DOANE ...Walter Doane was born August 14, 1877 at the rural home in the southern part of Osborne County, Kansas; the sixth child of Eleazer Bales and Amelia Cahill Doane. Walter attended the country school close to home and high school in Osborne. His first employment was as a school teacher, his future wife, Grace, being one of his students. After teaching for a year, he entered the laundry business in Osborne. ...On September 14, 1905, he was united in marriage to Grace Florence Mason, daughter of Nazair Earl and Sarah Susan Schenck Mason, of Osborne. ...In the summer of 1910, the family (wife and children: Faye, Eula, and Scott) went to Arizona to visit his brother, Frank. Frank and Walter and their families journeyed from Chiricahua, Arizona to the Grand Canyon and back in a covered wagon, also taking two saddle horses with the men alternating driving and riding. ...Returning to Osborne from this vacation, he continued in the laundry business there until 1912 when he purchased the laundries in Beloit, Kansas. There the family united with the Presbyterian Church which remained a lifetime affiliation. Walter was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Odd Fellows Lodge and served in the National Home Guard during World War I. ...In 1920, for health reasons, the family moved to a farm five miles south of Strasburg, Colorado. In 1926, he purchased a laundry in Smith Center, Kansas and the family moved there. The town of Smith Center remained the family home and business until his death from a heart attack on December 20, 1945. ...Six children were born to Walter and Grace: Mildred Faye, born July 5, 1906, married to Harold Earl Richardson on May 7, 1928; Eula Fern, born January 19, 1908, married to Lyle Dell McAllister on September 27, 1924; Walter Scott, born November 12, 1909, married to Lola Mae Dart on June 5, 1937; Madeen Grace, born September 26, 1911, married (1) Garold Yenne on May 13, 1931, (2) Harry Zimmerman on June 20, 1962; Ruth, born October 29, 1915, married to Ransom Nelson on February 29, 1936; Philip Quentin, born September 5, 1918, married to Lillian Carmella Poliseno in 1944. ...All the children of the family were at the last rites which were held from the Simmons-Rice Funeral Home in Smith Center, the Rev. Ira N. Faurot of the Presbyterian Church conducted the services. Burial was made in the Fairview Cemetery in Smith Center.
