Biography

Last and first names are uncertain. This has been speculation due to nickname of "Mace." Gravestone has Mason "Mace" Garland inscription. Possible that first name is actually Mason, not last name. The only reference to "Mary" is in Henry Garlands will and could be "Macy," not Mary. She has a granddaughter and great-granddaughter named Macy or Macie which points to first name of Mason with nickname, Mace.

Also, possible that birthplace is GA, not NC, if Henry Garland had a previous, unknown wife and mother of first two children in NC.

There are a number of DNA matches to her through Ancestry through Reuben White. This needs more research.

Notes

Birth place: Mary married Henry Garland and had her first two children in North Carolina, so Georgia as her birthplace is uncertain. Also Upson County, Georgia, was not formed until 1824.

Marriage place: Also probably in North Carolina since first two children were born there. Mary and Henry immigrated to GA about 1790. Henry was still listed in NC census for 1786 in Halifax County as a single. In 1793, he is on the tax list for Wilkes County, NC.
