John Mason was born at Mattawoman Plantation. Mattawoman was the country estate of Colonel William Eilbeck, a wealthy planter and merchant, and his wife Sarah Edgar.On 4 April 1750, Colonel Eilbeck's only child, 16-year-old Ann, married George Mason at Mattawoman. Mason's father's plantation, where Mason spent several years of his childhood, adjoined Mattawoman.[1]
Following his marriage to Anna Maria Murray on February 10, 1796 John moved to Georgetown. He built a summer residence on Analostan Island which he had inherited from his father. After financial setbacks, the family moved to Clermont in Fairfax County. The couple would have 10 children:[2]

Eilbeck Mason (May 20, 1806– June 28, 1862)
Murray Mason (January 4, 1808– January 11, 1875)
Maynadier Mason (January 4, 1808 – April 1865)
Anna Maria Mason (February 26, 1811– November 3, 1898) married Sydney Smith Lee
