Mathilda, born in 1851 in Canada East (Québec), was the daughter of Pierre and Maria Masse. She is recorded in the 1861 Census of Canada West (Ontario) living in Hay Township, Huron County, with her father, a farmer, and her mother and younger siblings. Her younger siblings were born in Ontario, suggesting that the family moved to Ontario about 1853.[1]
Mathilda married Pierre Cantin. Their son, Narcisse, born in 1870, is considered the founder of the French-Canadian settlement of St. Joseph, Ontario.[2]
