Biography

Lady Johanna Brereton, daughter and heir of Sir Geoffrey Massey[1]

Joan Massy of Tatton was born about 1463 [calc based on her father, Sir Geffrey, being 25 at her birth]. She was the only child of Sir Geoffrey Massey of Tatton, knight, and Isabel, daughter of sir John Butler of Bewsy, nigh Warrington in Lancashire. Her parents married in 31 Henry VI [1453].[2]

Joan married William Stanley, esq, son and heir of Sir William Stanley of Holt Castle, in Denbighshire. After his marriage, Sir William held Tatton in right of Joan his wife.[2]

Joan and William had one daughter also called Joan or Jane.[2] On 10 October in 11 [?Henry VIII], Richard Brereton, knt, and his wife, Joan, the daughter of William Stanley, esq, son of William Stanley, knt, petitioned the king concerning the granting of letters patent of restitution.[3]

Joan's husband William Stanely died about 14 Henry VII [1498].[2] Joan then married Sir Edward Pickering in 16 Henry VII [1500].[2]

Joan, widow of Sir Edward, married for the third time to Sir John Brereton, the son of Sir William Brereton of Brereton and Phillipa daughter of Sir Hugh Halse.[4] Sir John was the widower of Katherine, daughter and heir to Morrice Barkley with whom he had a daughter Walburgh.[4]

Joan and Sir John had one child, Phillipa.[4]

Joan died in 3 Henry VIII [22 April 1511-21 April 1512],[2] and in that same regnal year, 3 Henry VIII, an Inquisition post mortem was taken regarding Lady Johanna Brereton, daughter and heir of Sir Geoffrey Massey.[1]
