Biography

Sir Geffrey Massy of Tatton, knight, the son of Sir John Massey of Tatton, knight, and Alice, sister and heir to Sir Geffrey Worseley of Worseley in Lancashire, was born in 1387 (70 when he died in 1457).[1] Sir Geffrey's father was sheriff of Cheshire 11 Richard II [1387] and 13 Richard II [1390].[1] His father and his older brother Thomas were attainted 1 Henry IV.[1] His father died 22 July 4 Henry IV [1403] probably fighting with Henry Percy against Henry IV during the battle of Shrewsbury.[1]

Sir Geffrey had siblings:[1]

  1. Thomas, married Margaret. Thomas died without having any children on St Bartholomew's day, 8 Henry V [1420]. His wife Margaret then married Sir John Gresley;
  2. Richard;
  3. Hugh;
  4. John;
  5. Lawrence;
  6. Joan, married 1) Sir William Venables of Bollin Fee in Maxfield Hundred, and 2) Sir Oliver Stanley; and
  7. Margery, married Sir John Bromley of Badington in Cheshire.

Sir Geffrey inherited the family's estate after the death of his older brother Thomas.[1] His mother, Alice, died in October, 6 Henry VI [1427], and as his mother was the heir to her brother.[1] he would have inherited the estates of his uncle, Sir Geffrey Worseley of Worseley.

He married Margery, daughter of John Hilton of Farnsworth in Lancashire; they had no children.[1]

Sir Geoffry Mascy, of Workesley in co Lancaster, Knight, had children:

  1. Hugh;[2] who had children:
    1. Nicholas;[2]
  2. John,[2] who may have been a bastard.[1]

Some of the properties of which Sir Geoffry Mascy, of Workesley in co Lancaster, Knight, was seised were in Wygan co Lancaster, Callow, Adelym, and Hietford in co ?, of the yearly value of 20? marks, in his demesne as of fee, and in a deed dated in September, 32 Henry VI [1453-4], seised John Gartsyde, chaplain, Sir Geoffry's sons, Hugh Mascy and John Mascy, Rauff Langley, parson of Prestwyche, and Robert Orrell; "to hold the premises to them and their heirs for ever, to the intent that they should perform the said last of the said Sir Geoffrey Mascy".[2]

On 20 September, 32 Henry VI, Sir Geoffry Mascy made his last Will, in which he desired his feoffees to give all the premises mentioned above to himself for his life, then his son Hugh Mascy for life, then Nicholas, Hugh's son and heir for life, then Robert Orrell for life, then William Mascey for life, to Geoffrey Mascy, son of the ... and they were to find a priest to say mass and other divine service yearly in the Chapel of the Trinity in Eccles.[2]

Sir Geffrey died at the age of 70 on 4 October, 36 Henry VI [1457].[1] His nephew, William Massy, esq, son and heir of Sir Geffrey's brother Richard, was his heir.[1]

After the deaths of Sir Geoffrey, Hugh, Robert, William Mascye and his son and heir Geoffrey, without heir male of his body, Nicholas, after the death of John Rayneford, clerk, appointed Geoffrey Grymesdiche, clerk, to say divine service, but the tenants refused to pay Sir Geffrey Grymesdich, knight, and he had "been lytlyd and distorbyd" trying to take the rents because Sir John Brereton, Knight, and Dame Jane his wife, and Sir Richard Penkethom, priest, by the great might of Sir John were taking all the profits, so as Sir Geffrey Grymesdich was "of extreem poverty" he couldn't sue at the common law and therefore prayed for Letters of Subpena from the Duchy Court of Lancaster in 1510-11.[2]

The defendant, Sir John Brereton, his wife Dame Joan, and Sir Richard Penkethom, responded on 16 November, 1510, that Sir Geoffry Mascy in his Will ordered that all the premises should be amortised to a chantry in the Chapel of the Trinity in Eccles, of which Sir Geoffry Mascy and his heirs should be patrons, and it was to default to Nicholas Mascy and his heirs, if the premises were not so amortised than they should be given to Hugh Mascy and his heirs to find a priest, and if Hugh were to die without issue male, or if he was to fail to find a priest, then the estate was to cease and the premises were to remain to John Mascy in the form aforesaid. As the lands had not been amortised, nor had any estate of entail been made to the said Hugh, therefore Sir John Brereton and his wife Dame Jane, in the right of the said Dame Jane who was cousin and right heir to the said Sir Geoffrey Mascy, entered the said premises and had for the previous 5 years, "of their good and godly disposition" found a priest according to the will.[2]
