Research Notes

by Massey-3526 22:24, 13 November 2017 (EST)

#1:v Jefferson Massey of Wright and Laclede Co., MO is not the Edmund Jefferson Massey, father of Littleberry Crockett and siblings.

  • Edmund Jefferson Massey married Nancy Ann (Owens) Burchfield in Lauderdale Co, AL. in 1864. [2] Jefferson Massey of MO married Nancy Ann BARTON on 29 May 1872 in Laclede, MO.[3]
  • Edmund is on the 1870 and 1880 census- first in Giles Co. TN (listed as EJ Murry)[4] and then in Lauderdale Co. AL in 1880. [5] Both census records show his wife as Nancy.
  • Jefferson Massey of MO died in 1873-1875 in Laclede Co. MO (will recorded in 1875). Edmund Jefferson is in fact alive and well in 1880. [5]
  • Amitha's (EJ's sister) death certificate shows mother as Elizabeth Holden. According to researchers of Jefferson Massey of MO, his mother (Rebecca Blake Massey) died in 1860. Amitha and Edmund J. are found with Patience Massey as HOH on the 1860 Lauderdale Co. AL census. [6]

Because of the evidence above, it is feasible to conclude that James J. and Rebecca Blake Massey are NOT the parents of Edmund. Father is unknown but his mother is most likely Patience Elizabeth/ Elizabeth Patience Holden.

  1. 2: Possible fathers of EJ- on 1860 census in Lauderdale, AL (same census as EJ and mother) is a Thomas Massey born in SC, age 70 with a 34 year old Elizabeth Massey. Other Massey men in area who could be uncles or some relation were Richard Massey born in NC abt 1795 and resided in Lawrence Co. TN in 1840 and 1850. This Richard Massey had a son named Richard A. born about 1836. This is NOT the same Richard Massey living next door to Patience in Lauderdale AL in 1860. The Richard in AL was in the same county and state in 1850 but living with Helton and Newsome families. The latter being his future in-laws. So there remains the possibility of a second Richard Sr. that possibly died prior to 1850. However, nothing is found for him in the area for 1840.
