John Massey (20, batchelor, a collier), the son of Samuel Massey (collier) was married after banns to Harriott Thornley (20, spinster), the daughter of William Thornley (blacksmith) on 3rd August 1863 at Christ Church, Coalville, Leicestershire, England. Thomas Betteridge and Mary Ann Massey were witnesses to the marriage.

By 1881, John Massey and family were living in Hucknall Torkard, Nottinghamshire.
