Biography

Thomas Frederick (Fred) Massey was born in 1880 in Harrow Weald, Middlesex. He was the only child of Frederick Massey, a carpenter, and Sarah Massey née Barker. His father passed away the same year he was born, in 1880, at the age of 31.

In the 1881 census, Sarah and one year old Fred were living in Lyon Cottages, Harrow-on-the-Hill. Sarah is registered as a 32 year old widow, and was working as a cook. [1]

In 1891 the census places Fred, aged 11, living in the household of his uncle, Henry Flitney, in Hatfield, Hertfordshire. Henry was the husband of Emma, Sarah’s sister. [2]

In 1901 he was living again in Harrow with another uncle, Arthur Massey, who was the same age as Fred (21). Fred’s occupation is registered as stationer’s assistant. [3]

In 1903, Fred married Louisa Lane, a 22 year old from Buckinghamshire who was working as a domestic servant in the house of Florence Mole, a finishing school for girls at Harrow on the Hill. [4]

They had two children: Winifred (1907), and Irene (1909).

In the 1911 census his occupation is listed as a newsagent shopkeeper. [5]

Fred Massey passed away in 1934, aged 54. [6] He is buried in St Mary’s churchyard, Harrow-on-the-Hill. [7]
