Mary Massey was born in about 1828 in Rainhill, Lancashire. She was the daughter of Charles and Esther Massey.

By June 6th 1841, the family were living in Yew Tree House, Eccleston; Mary's father was a carter.

By March 30th 1851, they were in Fazakerley Street, Prescot; Mary's father was a carter. Mary was a house servant; her brother Henry was a carter; the younger children (Charles, Joseph and Anne) were still in school.
