James Massy was the son of son of Godfrey and Anne Massy. He was born about 1823 in Ireland.
In about 1841 James Massy married Ann Hickey born in County Limerick.
They had a son Michael Massie (1842 - 1888) and a daughter Margaret born 1844. Ann Hickey died about 1845 and James remarried a woman called Mary. By his second wife he had another daughter called Mary born in 1847.
James Massy, his second wife and his three children emigrated to Queensland, Australia aboard the Florentia arriving 29 April 1853; James’s wife Mary died during the voyage. The shipping record states James Massy was aged 30 [born about 1823] born Limerick, a carpenter, Roman Catholic, could both read and write.[1][2]
