DR. CALVIN WILSON MATEER was a pioneer Presbyterian missionary in Shandong (Shantung) province and founder of the first Christian college in China.

Biography

Calvin Wilson Mateer was born on 9 January 1836 in Pennsylvania to John Mateer and Mary Nelson (Diven) Mateer, and brother of Robert McCheyne Mateer

He married 1) Julia Brown on 27 December 1862 in Delaware at the home of her uncle. [1] They set out for China, and arrived in the treaty port of Dengzhow (P’eng-lai, or Tengchow) in 1864.

Progress in the boys’ school which they started was slow. By 1872 Calvin had developed a three-point formula for teaching: all instruction would be in Chinese rather than English as other mission schools required; traditional Chinese education would be supplemented by the disciplines of Western science; and standards of admission were raised and Christian character was emphasized.

In 1898 classes were extended to include college level, making the school the first Christian college in China. In 1904 it moved inland to the more central location of Weihsien (or Wei-fang). and finally to Jinan (Tsinan), the provincial capital. By 1908, graduates of Shantung Christian University were serving as Christian teachers in more than a hundred schools. Calvin and Julia never had children of their own, and he lost Julia in 1898.

Calvin married 2) Ada Haven on Sept. 25, 1900.

He passed away on 28 September 1908 and was buried at Chefoo Temple Hill Cemetery in Yantai, Shandong Province, China. Julia's remains were relocated to Chefoo where they rested side by side.
