Biography

Matthias Matthiasson was a Finn from Värmland who arrived in New Sweden aboard the Mercurius in March 1656. [1] He was accompanied by his wife and one daughter. [2]

Research Note

Peter S. Craig first identified this person as Matthias Mattson in his "Settlers" series [6] published in 1999. In his "1671 Census" [7] also published in 1999 he refers to this same person as Matthias Matthiasson. The name also appears as Matthiasson in one of his "Forefather" articles [8] published in 2001. The name was also given as Matthias Matthiasson in the Swedish Colonial Society's list of qualifying forefathers in A Guide to New Sweden Forefathers, 1638-1664 Arrivals in the section headed 'Settlers having daughters only." As of 26 Jan 2017 the version of this list posted online omits that section. Johan Grelsson and ...

Given the birth dates for Annika and Elisabeth, I think it is more likely that they are sisters of Matthias than daughters.

The difficulty with parents to the immigrants to New Sweden is that records at that time in Sweden are scant. With the forest Finns it is even more difficult, because they often lived at the margins between parishes and also moved several times, because of the demands of their slash-and-burn farming techniques. It takes a skilled specialist to trace them.

Another difficulty is the patronymic system and the abundance of men with the same first name fathering children all over Sweden. Which has made it a little too easy for the anonymous initial producers of imported GEDCOMs to make false connections based on name similarity.

Completely agree with Gerry. The branch of his supposed parents (born after his death) is a typical greenleave hotchpotch of people from different parts of Sweden happening to have similar names.

Parents and sibling are bogus! Check the dates.

All were imported from the same gedcom.

I have changed this write-up a bit and added a research note for discussion of the name. I think Matthiasson is the best bet -- and end-of-line as he had daughters only.

Should he be Matthiasson or Mattson? Both are mentioned in bio.

Yes good catch, we just need a leader to remove the PPP so I can change the LNAB.

Shouldn't LNAB be Matthiasson? I think all of the "ai" variants are perpetuations of a typo.
