James Matheny was born in Appalachia, in Virginia (now West Virginia).

He served in Company E, 4th Regiment, W. Va. Cavalry, Union Army during the Civil War.

He is buried in the Keister Cemetery, near Connings, Gilmer County, WV.

James was born in 1827. He passed away in 1897.
