"Besides Sam Matheny, and his brother Calvin, came three of their sisters, Margaret, Martha and Lucy. Calvin died on the Sandy river, on the Barlow road, on the last leg of their long trek. Martha lived only a month after arrival in the Willamette valley. Lucy died the next spring. The "cholera" or what was called the cholera, from which so many people died on the plains, if it did not cause death quickly, as generally happened, it left those who suffered from its ravages very much debilitated for weeks and even for many months."
