Biography

Jasper Newton "Jay" Matheny was born in Schuyler, Illinois, 4 August 1834, the son of Daniel Matheny and Mary Cooper.[1]

He emigrated with his family to Oregon in 1843.[2]

The day after Christmas 1852, he married Mary Bell Ring.[3][4][5][6]

A year after their arrival in Oregon, they settled at Wheatland, where Jasper ran the ferry for 30 years. Afterward, he moved to Washington, where with a partner, he founded the city of Spokane.[7]

Mary having died, Jasper married Elizabeth Lee in Idaho, in 1879. They moved to Mexico and founded a plantation there.

Jasper died just after arriving in San Francisco, returning from Mexico. His grave was later relocated, and is unmarked.[8]
