Biography

Isaiah was a cooper, and settled his family first in Astoria, then in Bernadotte.

In 1850, Isaiah married Ruth Rampley Cooper, evidently a young widow with three little boys.

In 1860 Census, Fulton Co., Astoria, their household includes 3 boys named Cooper: George 20, John 17, Abram 16, and Charles Matheny, age 23.

These boys were not with them in the 1850 census, the year of their marriage. It was just Isaiah, age 22, born Indiana, and Ruth, age 25, born Ohio, in their household in Astoria.

In 1851, Isaiah filed a lawsuit against one Samuel T. Elgin in a dispute over payment due on a town lot. One of the witnesses summoned was Joshua Matheny.

In early 1864, Isaiah himself was arrested and charged on a 5 count indictment of selling liquor without a license. No resolution of this case was found in the file.
