James Mather was born in about 1806 in Eccleston, Lancashire.
James married Phoebe Appleton on 4 May 1828 at Rainford Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. Neither had been married before, and both were of the local parish. James was a husbandman. The witnesses were Joseph Garner and Ellen Brownbill. Phoebe already had a son John, who'd been born out of wedlock and christened on 21 Jul 1822.
Their son Peter was christened on 12 Apr 1829 at Prescot St Mary's. His father's occupation was recorded as labourer, and the family's address as Eccleston.
Their daughter Mary was christened on 11 Nov 1832 at Prescot St Mary's. Her father's occupation was recorded as labourer, and the family's address as Eccleston. Mary may have died young - she wasn't with her parents in 1841.
Their daughter Margaret was born in about 1834 in Eccleston.
Their daughter Phoebe was christened on 21 Oct 1836 at Prescot St Mary's. Her father's occupation was recorded as glass manufacturer, and the family's address as Eccleston.
Their daughter Esther was christened on 5 Jun 1840 at Prescot St Mary's. Her father's occupation was recorded as glass grinder, and the family's address as Eccleston.
By June 6th 1841, they were living in Thatto Heath, Eccleston. James was working as a glass grinder, as was Phoebe's son John Appleton.
By March 30th 1851, they were still in Eccleston. James was employed as a labourer. Four of their children were still living with them - Peter (now 18), Margaret (17), Phoebe (14) and Esther (10) - and also a lodger, 20-year-old Ann Barnes.
