Johann was born about 1878 in Hessen, Germany. He came with his parents to the United States in 1881 on the ship Cimbria http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_ship.asp?sh=cimbr. He was the son of Johann Mathis and Anna Seipp. He passed away 22 Aug 1893 at the age of 15 of Typhoid Fever and was buried in the Cave Hill Cemetery in Jefferson County, Kentucky.
His father passed away shortly afterwards.
