Thomas and Jean (Jane) Nicol Matheson were servants at Redcastle, Killerarnan on the Black Isle, northern Scotland at the time of their marriage on 4 June 1819.[1] They had at least two children: Roderick Nicol (b.1824)[2] and Elspet Cathrine Matheson (b. 1821)[3]. Redcastle was sold by Sir William Fettes to Sir William Baillie in 1838[4] who had William Burn remodel it in 1840 - the year the family immigrated to New York.
Son Roderick sailed around the horn to San Francisco in 1849 and eventually set up a large farm in Healdsburg by 1856. Both Thomas and Jane (Jean) were living with Roderick and his family in Healdsburg in 1860.[5]
Roderick was killed in the Civil war and Thomas was granted position of Fireman with fixed pay and a resolution of sympathies by the California State Assembly.[6] He served as a Porter for the Journal Clerks' room of the California State Assembly.[7] He was elected member at a Liberal Republican Meeting on 23 May 1872 but I can find no further reference to his, his wife or his daughter.
