Roderick was born (or baptised) 2 June 1823, son of John Matheson of Drumbuie[1][2]
In the 1841 census, Janet Macdonald (45), Mary Macdonald (20), Janet Macdonald (15), Murdo Macdonald (15), Flora Macdonald (14), Margaret Macdonald (13), Roderick Macdonald (11), William Macdonald (8), Christy Macdonald (2) and Roderick Matheson (15, tailors apprentice) are living on Frances Street, Kintail.[3]
In the 1851 census, Mary Matheson (74), sons John (32, fisherman), Roderick (27, tailor) and great-grandchild Colin Macrae (9) are living at 13 Harbour St, Lochalsh. All were born in Lochalsh[4]. Colin's mother/Mary's daughter Isabella is living at number 16.
Roderick Matheson married Catherine Matheson on 11 Oct 1851 in Lochalsh[5]
In the 1861 census, Roderick Matheson (37, clothier), wife Catherine (32), and children Donald (8), Christy (6), John (4), Mary (3) and Alexander (9mo) are living at "Fank", Lochalsh. All born in Plockton[6]
In the 1871 Roderick Matheson (46, tailor), wife Catherine (43), children John (15, pupil teacher), Mary (13), Alexander (11), Margaret (9), Isabella (7), Johanna (5) and Georgina (1) are living at 4 Point, Plockton, Lochalsh. All were born in Lochalsh[7]
In the 1881 census, Roderick Matheson (57, tailor), wife Catherine (52), children Donald (28, steamboat agent), Alexander (20, student in arts), Margaret (19), Johanna (15) and Georgina (11) are living at 2 Cooper Street, Plockton[8]
In the 1891 census, Roderick Matheson (67, tailor), wife Catherine (62), daughter Margaret (25), grandson Donald Maclean (10), as well as son Donald (38, steamer agent), his wife Isabella Matheson (30), and grandchildren Catherine (1) and Murdo (3mo) are living at Cooper Street, Plockton[9]
Roderick Matheson died aged 68 on 2 March 1892 in Plockton. He was a master tailor, married to Catherine Matheson, and his parents were John Matheson (labourer) and Mary (Matheson) Matheson. Cousin "K McLennan" was present at death[10][11]

- Christina is married in New Zealand to one of the Macbeaths of Applecross.
- Mary, married to Donald Maclean, with issue, three sons and one daughter. One of the sons Donald Matheson Maclean—is a medical student at Edinburgh University.
- Margaret, married to John Mackenzie, fish-curer, Strome Ferry.
- Isabella, married to John Mackenzie, Plockton,
