Biography

Nancy was born about 1828, likely at New Lairg, to Duncan Matheson and Jane Matheson.

On April 19, 1844 Christian Matheson of New Lairg made her will. She made bequeathments to her family members, including her niece by her brother Duncan, Ann.[1]

Nancy married John McArthur of Wikins Grant, and they later moved to Cumberland Co.[2][3] They had:

  1. Duncan, b. abt. 1851[4]
  2. Jane, b. abt. 1853[4]
  3. Christy, b. abt. 1855[4]
  4. Alexander, b. abt. 1858[4]
  5. Margaret, b. abt. 1860[4]
  6. Bessie, b. abt. 1864[4]
  7. Cyrus, b. abt. 1866[4]
  8. Mary A., b. abt. 1868[4]

In 1871, Nancy is enumerated with her husband and their children in the Pugwash polling district.[4] Her husband is a widower in the 1891 census.[5]

Research Notes

Duncan and Jane Matheson's family is mentioned in Ward's Farms and Farmers series in segments on their grandsons Charles H. Matheson (son of William),[2] and C. Tupper Matheson (son of Neil).[3] Nancy (the aunt of the featured farmers) is mentioned as marrying John McArthur of Wilkins Grant, and later of Cumberland Co.
