Murdo Matheson
The information we have on this man comes from the Rev William Matheson, both from his article on Matheson family history in the Stornoway Gazette and the 'Genealogies of the Mathesons' from the Transactions of the Gaelic Society of Inverness.
The two articles differ in the name given to this subject; whilst the Gazette names him Murdo, the 'Genealogies' refers to him as Malcolm 'Calum mac Mhurchaidh' (albeit with a question mark).
He was a son of Murdo and Christina nee Macaulay and was tenant at Kneep or Valtos. He was married and had at least two sons; Donald and Murdo (conflicting report again - the Gazette article claims that this son's name is now lost to us).
Also Known As: Malcolm Matheson; Calum mac Mhurchaidh; Murchadh mac Mhurchaidh c Dhughaill; Murdo McUrchy Cuill
Matheson [4]:
Murdoch Matheson may have had other sons besides those mentioned above, including Angus Matheson and Duncan Matheson, tenants in Stornoway in 1718, about whom nothing further is known. (Angus and Malcolm were not used as Christian names for Mathesons on the mainland. They are MacAulay names, introduced no doubt as a result of Murdoch’s marriage to Christian MacAulay.)
