NOTE: Many men named Angus Matheson lived around the same time, so it isn't easy to be sure about identity. They usually had no middle names or other distinguishing features. Several of them can easily be confused.
There was an Angus Matheson born about 1813 in Invernesshire, who enlisted in the British army and served at Toronto in the 93rd regiment as Depot Hospital Sergeant, discharged in 1852. Facts are scanty but he seems to have been an entirely different person from the Angus Matheson described in this profile.
One of the Angus Mathesons at Toronto married Margaret Grant about 1852-3 but exact details have not been found. How to be sure which Angus Matheson it was?
The Angus Matheson described in this profile appears to have been born in 1828 at Rogart, Sutherlandshire, Scotland. There were at least 2 Angus Mathesons born that year at the same place: one was the son of George Matheson & Anne Munro; the other was the son of Hugh Matheson & Janet Mackay. Because the name Hugh got repeated several times in this family, I think the latter parents are likely to be correct but there is little evidence.
Angus Matheson was listed in the 1841 UK census at Clashmore, Sutherlandshire: Angus Matheson, age 14, lived with elder brother Hugh, 15, and several younger sisters. Where were their parents? Both presumed to have died.
One of the Angus Mathesons who lived at Toronto in mid-1800s became a pharmacist... but which Angus was it? This one seems a likely candidate. A book with multiple authors, "Industries of Canada", published in 1886, wrote about him:
“A. Matheson, Chemist and Druggist, 138 King Street West - Mr. Angus Matheson is now one of the oldest and best known chemists in the City of Toronto, he having been established in business as early as 1853. Mr. Matheson was brought up to the profession in the British army, having served 22 years with the 93rd Highlanders in the West Indies, Canada and elsewhere, with distinction, making several important discoveries in the preservation of leeches for second use, by obliging them to eject the blood they had absorbed, by the simple application of a certain preparation only known to himself and the British medical authorities. For this service he received the Government’s recognition. Besides being a pharmacist of long standing and experience, Mr. Matheson is an aurist and occulist, making a specialty of the treatment of the eye and ear, achieving many wonderful cures. He also has several other preparations for the cleansing of the blood and bilious attacks. He occupies an extensive store handsomely fitted up at 136 King Street West, and has a large custom. He is a Scotchman by birth, a member of the St. Andrew’s Society, and an old and respected citizen.”
Angus Matheson passed away in 1895 at Toronto and was buried at Necropolis Cemetery, grave K-107. But WHICH Angus Matheson was buried there?
