Biography

Both John's marriage record to Euphemia MacRae in Portree, Skye in 1889 and his death record in St Rollox Glasgow in 1928 give his parents as Angus Matheson and Ann, whose maiden surname was also Matheson. However it has been very difficult to ascertain this, apart from his mother being Ann Matheson. She appears in the 1991 census at 42 Bosville Terrace, Portree, Skye, Scotland as "mother-in-law" age 60, born in Snizort, Skye and living with Johns wife Euphemia (Effie) and four of Effie's sons.

The most likely scenario is that John was the illegitimate son of Ann Matheson and was born in Snizort in 1861. John's maternal grandfather, Alexander Matheson died in 1883 aged 96 and according to the record of his death he was the son of Alexander Matheson and Flora Macdonald. His wife Ann died of asthma in 1878 and according to the record of her death she was the daughter of Norman Matheson and Mary Nicolson.
