William Mathews was an early settler in Augusta Co., VA. He was born in Ireland about 1715 and of Scotch-Irish ancestry.

William immigrated to the colonies about 1732 and settled in Augusta County, Virginia by 1734.[1] He married Martha Wright, daughter of William Wright and Margaret Wright, about 1747. William Mathews built the stone house known as "The White House" about 8 miles from Staunton, and lived there until his death at age 96. The house was still standing off Union Church Road in the 1950s. He passed away in 1811.

Research

This William's relationship to parents John Mathews and Ann Archer is disputed. There are blood ties among their descendants but the exact relationship is unconfirmed. L. Lewis Peyton made early inference to William as the son of John and Ann Archer line in "History of Augusta County, Virginia," concluding his section on "The Mathews Family" with a remark, to wit: "Governor George Mathews, of Georgia, and Sampson Mathews, of Staunton, one of whose daughters m Sam'l Clark, another Gen. Sanm'l Blackburn, were of this family" Sources like this and transcription of a Mathews Family Bible were apparently replied upon for SAR and DAR membership applications in the 1950s, but today, now a more widely accepted source[2] is oft cited as evidence of only one son of John and Ann Mathews named William, and he was born in 1747 and died prior to 1790. While it's possible John Mathews and Ann Archer had two sons named William, it's more likely the William Mathews of this profile is related to John Mathews (wife Ann Archer) in some other way. (DNA comparison among descendants show blood ties).

He could be a brother or nephew if we are to assume birth order of his children is near-correct, and the family followed typical naming patterns,[3] however, it would still be mostly conjecture.

William and Martha (Wright) Mathews' known sons were James, Richard, Joseph, Sampson, John, William, George, John, Samuel. Their daughters were named Jane, Catherine, Mary, and Margaret. [4]

Due to lack of confidence and conflicting sources, John Mathews and Ann Archer Mathews are not currently attached as William's parents.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

Added additional sources. Based on these and other sources, which claim Wm Mathew's birth year is closer to 1715. This creates a conflict with the birth and death dates for Ann Archer and John Mathews. Sources I am relying on give different birth and death dates for his parents
