Biography

Thomas was a mason who was born in 1846. His parents were William Matthews Prout and Grace Chenoweth. His birth was registered under the name of Thomas Matthews. [1] He was baptized on 20 September 1846 under the name of Thomas Matthews Prout. [2]

His father died when he was just three years old. In 1851 he was living with his widowed mother and siblings. [3]

Thomas married Grace Mugford in 1867. [4] They had three children by 1871: Thomas, William, and Mary Grace. [5]

The family emigrated to Ontario, Canada in 1872. [6]
