Samuel was born in 1822 in Pennsylvania, United States. He migrated to Ashland County, Ohio, United States, where he worked as a carpenter and lived with John Hough's family in 1850.[1]
Samuel Mathews and Lydia Urie were married by S. A. McCluskey January 23, 1851, in Ashland, Ohio, United States.[2][3] They migrated to Windsor, Eaton County, Michigan, where they owned a small farm.[4] Samuel served as a justice of the peace in Windsor in 1862.[5] He served as treasurer of Windsor Township 1878-1879.[6]
Samuel was a farmer when he registered for the draft during the US Civil War.[7] They continued to live in Windsor[8][9] He served in Company G, Third Michigan Infantry, and transferred to 5th Michigan Infantry June 10, 1864.[10]
Samuel Mathews died May 30, 1893, in Dimondale, Eaton County, Michigan, United States. He was buried at Dimondale Cemetery in Dimondale, Eaton County, Michigan, USA.[11][12]
