John Mathew was born at Oxford in Christ Church on 6 December 1580.[1][2]
John, second son of Archbishop of York Tobias Mathew and his wife Frances Barlow,[1] married Jane Toothby.[3] In her 1628 will, Frances names John and his daughters Frannces and Dorcus, who were unmarried and not yet 21. Also named are grandsons Josias and John Mathew, who are likely John's sons (Frances names her son Sir Toby Mathew knt in her will, but he apparently died childless). She also names her grandson John's wife Barberie and, in a codicil dated 15 May 1629, speaks of "the Child he now hath by Barbera his wyffe" (her granddaughters are still unmarried and under 21).[1]
John passed away about 1652.[4]

His daughter Frances married George Holloway and they immigrated to Virginia. Frances' cousin, Samuel, was the first governor of Colonial Virginia. The county which includes Jamestown, Williamsburg and Newport News is called Matthews.
The bad part is the family Matthews and Holloway made their money on tobacco and had slaves.
I hope to get to Virginia next year. Meanwhile, I'm headed to the UK.
