Henry was born on April 17, 1805 in Putnam, Ohio. He was the first son of Dr. Increase Mathews and Betsey Leavens.[1] At the time of his birth, the settlement was named Springfield, but it was renamed Putnam in 1814, then annexed by Zanesville in 1872.
On October 3, 1832, Henry married Margaret Dillon in Muskingum County.[2] Together they had 4 children: Louis, Edith Dillon, Betsey Leavens, and Margaret Dillon. Sometime after his marriage, his father built his stone house which still exists today. It is located across Woodlawn Avenue from the Dr. Increase Mathews museum.
