According to the same record, William Mathews was born circa 1744 and died in 1818.
Mary Jane Miller died circa 1822.
William is listed as living in Pike County in the 1830 Georgia Census Index (p. 116). Further descendants of William and Coleman Mathews can be found in "Our Kin" by W. H. Manning, Jr. and Edna Anderson Manning. Much of the information on this family came from Mrs. Francine Pendergrass and the will of Mrs. Sara Mathews Smith from Oglethorpe County. There are currently four theories concerning Moses Mathews as the father (ancestral family) of William Mathews:
William was born about 1755 in South Carolina and died 11-28-1819 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. He married Mary Jane Miller in 1785 in Wilkes County, Georgia. Mary Jane was born in Virginia but her parents are not yet known. There were several Miller families in Wilkes County in the late 1700's. It is now thought that the father of Mary Jane was Presley Miller and his sons are thought to be Presley who married Anna Simmons 1795 in Oglethorpe County, and Joel, who's wife was Eady, maiden name unknown, born about 1744. Mary Jane would have been born about 1867. In the minutes of the Millstone Baptist Church, there is reported the death of Mary Mathews as occurring on the 15th of October, 1822. While no other information is given, this would be about the same time of death as William. This would make our Mary about 55 years of age. William and Mary Jane are buried at the Glade near Lexington in Oglethorpe County. Their grave is covered with a marble slab with "William Mathews and Wife" cut into it.
The will of William Mathews filed in Oglethorpe County, Will Book A, page 178, reads as follows:
In the name of God Amen. I, William Mathews of Oglethorpe County, being low in bodily health, but of sound mind and of perfect memory, do by them present make null and void all other will or wills and declare this to be my Last Will and Testament. First, I commit my body to the dust from which it was taken and my soul to God as a blank hoping to find redemption through Jesus Christ.
