Biography

Lillian Charlotte Mathews was born on 28 May 1884 at Minlaton, South Australia. She was the daughter of Thomas Mathews and Elizabeth Pretty.^[1]

On 14 May 1898, Lillian (then aged 13 years) had a letter published in the Children's Column of the Adelaide Observer (SA : 1843 - 1904):

Minlaton, May 6.

Dear Uncle Harry

I hope you are quite well. We are getting up a bazaar and a concert for June 28. I hope you will be over for it. We have several pets, two rabbits, a cockatoo — it can almost say anything — a cockatoo parrot that can say a few things, and a Melbourne Rosella parrot, and about twenty canaries, and a few other birds with them. We had a nice dog, but it went to the paddock with my sister, and coming home it ran into a fence and got some poisoned meat. It took six fits and then died. Father tried everything he knew of to save it, but it was of no use. We have three nice cows in milk. One of them we can do anything with.

I have five sisters and seven brothers and a sister dead. There is one sister married and three brothers. I have seven nephews and nieces altogether. We have a nice large flower garden and flower-house, which my brother looks after. It is my fourteenth birthday on the 28th of this month.

Lillian never married, and died on 24 November 1965, at Norwood, South Australia. She was 81 years old.^[3]

Lillian is buried at the Mitcham General Cemetery, Mitcham, South Australia.^[4]
