Thomas Mathews was born in Glamorgan, Wales.

Thomas was born in 1676 in Llandaff Court. He was the son of Colonel Edward Matthews. His maternal grandfather was Thomas Armstrong MP (1633-1684).
He joined the navy in 1690.
He married Henrietta Burgess of Antigua in 1705. They had a son Thomas who became a Major in the army.
Henrietta died about 1740 and Thomas remarried to Milicent Powell in 1745.
He passed away in 1751.
