John was born about 1762. He died in 1838.

- Suddenly at Penzance, on Tuesday, aged 75, Mr. John Matthews, Ship-builder, a man much respected and beloved by all who knew him. Mr. Matthews was for many years the principal tradesman in his line at Penzance; and between 20 and 30 years ago, he built the dry-dock at that place, for a long while the only one in Cornwall, and therefore a great accommodation to the public.
